MPAA Demands $15 Million from The Pirate Bay

Written by Ernesto on May 08, 2008

The MPA(A) has announced that it is demanding $15.4 million from the Pirate Bay in the upcoming court case, to cover the damages they suffered from 4 movies and 13 TV-episodes that were made available via the popular BitTorrent tracker.

mpaa pirate bay

The movie titles they are claiming damages for are Harry Potter, Syriana, The Pink Panther and Walk the Line and the 13 episodes of the popular TV-show Prison Break. MPAA demands 222,50 kronor ($37) for each download. For Harry Potter, 261,50 kronor ($43) and for the first season of Prison Break 416 kronor ($68).

‘The Pink Panther’ is the most popular title among Pirate Bay users; the least popular, by a mile, is ‘Syriana’. The movies have been downloaded 49,593 and 3,679 times respectively, according to MAQS, the law firm which represents MPAA.”

Pirate Bay’s Peter Sunde (Brokep) is not impressed by Hollywood’s claims, he told TorrentFreak in a response: “They know they are losing, and try to make us look like big criminals by adding some zeros to a claim for a made-up crime.”

“The worst thing is that I lost 100 kronor on a bet on the number they would come up with,” Sunde added. “And, it sucks that they didn’t claim more than for Napster and the other sites. It’s cooler to break the record.”

When Monique Wadsted, MPAA’s lawyer and a talkshow host, was asked whether the MPAA really thinks every download is a lost sale, she said: “We don’t know that, but the copyright law doesn’t care about that. It says that if you have downloaded something illegally, you must pay regardless, if you would’ve bought it or not.”

Wadsted expects the worst now she has announced the claims, even being hacked by Pirate Bay fanboys: “I know that they have an increased interest in my person and that they try to ridicule me. I also count on having my computer hacked. As a business lawyer, I’m not used to these kinds of reactions.”

MPAA is not the only organization claiming damages. A month ago, IFPI claimed $2.5milion in damages and earlier today AntipiratbyrÃ¥n asked for (1.1 million. This January, prosecutor HÃ¥kan Roswall asked the court for a $188,000 fine for four individuals - Fredrik Neij (”TiAMO”), Gottfrid Svartholm (”Anakata”), Peter Sunde and Carl Lundström.

There is no date set for the court case yet, but it will probably take a few more months before the trial starts.

To be continued.

That sucks ass.

lets see some proof dear mpaa, everybody is free to claim anything. But backing it up…
well…

Looks like tough times are ahead for all BT users and websites. I think we seriously need to rally ourselves and coordinate support for the cause. Politicians ultimately have the power to dictate what we are allowed to share and how, and they’ll simply impose stricter and more punishing laws upon us it seems.

What can stop them? Public opinion? Public awareness? Currently the MPAA can show more than 90% of the western world their point of view in a matter of days thanks to their advertising power….how the feck can we combat that kind of brainwashing??

why does it suck ass. at this point it doesn’t really matter what bull the mpaa tries to pull, its a sure thing that tpb wont have to pay a dime and will be completely unaffected.

Jesus Titty Fuckin’

Not TPB as well. Looks like mininova is next. FUCK!!!

More people should have downloaded “Syriana” instead of “Pink Panther”, it’s a shame.

7 May 08, 2008 at 16:31 by andyness

Lol. They could have demanded one billion if they wanted. They will not win whatsoever.

Btw. How can they know that the downloaders didn’t own what they downloaded in the first place? There they have a problem, lol.

“More people should have downloaded “Syriana” instead of “Pink Panther”, it’s a shame”

abso-bloody-lutely. It always frustrates me that the most downloaded movies on BT are the crappest american blockbusters, with awful critic ratings, and appalling recycled plots. How about “the lives of others”, “after the wedding”, “still life”, “starting out in the evening”, or anything else that stimulates a single braincell during viewing?

lol@MPAA, when will they realize, no one gives a shit, and it isn’t going to stick on TPB. sod off.

Furthermore, those hypocrisy of the MPAA and it’s associates is repelling (I’m looking your way Mrs Wadsted). The only persons stalked were members of the TPB crew, APB had to apologise for hiering P.I.’s. And how exactly hacked Torrentspy?

“Btw. How can they know that the downloaders didn’t own what they downloaded in the first place? There they have a problem, lol”

Heh, you’re forgetting that actual points of legality and morality have nothing whatsoever to do with this battle. Its about one thing, money, and how much they can continue to screw the world over. Its not surprising that this mad dictatorial monopoly is unwilling to let the ‘creative arts’ go from its cold crazed grip. They’ve enjoyed their billion dollar profits for too long to give it up easily.

“hehe i started an official boycott today=) fuck the record companys. never going to buy another cd/dvd again.”

I haven’t bought a movie or music (apart from magnatune.com & radiohead from them direct) in more than 5 years. I bought one boxed game in all that time too. Piracy is a beautiful thing. The contract misery that musicians suffer is something I can say I haven’t personally contributed to in years :)

I want to make it juicy for ya.

15 May 08, 2008 at 16:50 by Anonymous

So what? Some Hollywood executives lost out in another million bucks, big deal.

And I’m really sorry, but TPB didn’t release/upload any of the material, I would think it is the job of the prosecution to prove that these downloads lead to a loss in sales.

MPAA/IFPI and money-hustling corporations everywhere need to get fucked.

16 May 08, 2008 at 16:56 by Turkish

Me again, Just to point out I can’t wait till TPB actully buys there own country (island) and lay down ground rules in there country (island) I mean becuase they own it they can do what ever they want with it. :D

But they need to raise $2.000.000 (two million dollars) to buy one.

you can find the post on the site if you want to read more.

Live long TPB!!! I wish they can hook up with mininova.org as well, that would be awsome, thell own there own island and do what ever the hell they want.

And another thought is, people can start to “host” websites from that island and if its 100% legal to do that on there island then other countrys like USA can’t do shit!! :D

DO IT BOYS! DO IT FOR THE COMMUNITY OF TORRENTS! BUY THE ISLAND!

Peace.

Some movies / games I DL I already own and are deemed unplayable…. the disc is so fucked up I can’t use it… bet they’ll fine me out the ass for it or fine me for using the damned site

Scum, MPAA and that lot. God will extract their punishment from them went them and their sharks are in hell. Laws don’t necessarily make it right to do certain things. So what if I download the latest version of a show, the odds is that it is available via streaming anyways. Losers.

@those “boycotting”, people that generally don’t buy anything and just pirate stuff are thieves with those intentions to never actually buy anything. I still buy shit, of the stuff I really want permanent copies of. Don’t forget, by buying stuff from your local store (not talking about Wal-Mart) you support you local economy, one way or another.

“by buying stuff from your local store (not talking about Wal-Mart) you support you local economy, one way or another”

I know what you mean, but I can’t see that it helps them in the long run - in selling these types of products they are reliant on very low profit margin goods, manufactured god knows where, with prices that are completely dictated by corps out of their control. How can that situation be good for them? I’d rather buy stuff that I think actually supports them (like local grown veg and milk etc.) and not buy other stuff that doesn’t, like CDs, at all.

Hell will freeze over before those numbnuts over at the MAFIAA get a BEAN outta The Pirate bay…

TPB FTW - Huzzah!

21 May 08, 2008 at 17:23 by JonathonDoh

Just out of curiosity… Considering that TPB is a listing site, and doesn’t host the content that’s under contention AFAIK, how does it make them responsible?
You wouldn’t sue the phone company for publishing the name of a company performing illegal activities in the phone book, would you?

“I also count on having my computer hacked” - well, you’d expect that to happen if you make frivolous and unnecessary threats.

Btw, I’m not condoning hacking into her computer…or anyone else’s for that matter.

23 May 08, 2008 at 17:37 by Anonymous

“I also count on having my computer hacked”

Surely that goes for anyone running a Micro$oft product. Its a bit of a platitudinous statement therefore don’t you think.

Now if she said that and was running Linux people might be a bit more interested…

“The worst thing is that I lost 100 kronor on a bet on the number they would come up with,” Sunde added. “And, it sucks that they didn’t claim more than for Napster and the other sites. It’s cooler to break the record.”

Hehe funny!

Guess they managed to fabricate some evidence so they wanted to get some publicity for this..

“Wadsted expects the worst now she has announced the claims, even being hacked by Pirate Bay fanboys..”

I dont know how to hack, but i hope people who do dont disappoint the bitch.

Am sure some trolls/morons will come writing about how TPB deserves it etc etc… only have one thing to say to them; ask your mom back for the change from what i paid her yesterday for blowing me, then take that change and go buy yourself a nice shiny CD/DVD to support the content industry.
